This site attempts to integrate several family lines together, including, but certainly not limted to, Aumick, Woodruff, Sage, Tennety, Jones, Spaulding, and Barrager. The majority of the early research has been done by John P. Sage. This is our legacy and our site. All are welcomed to participate. This is a place we can save our stories in any form including audio, video, pictures and written.
This our family site. The title is an homage to the movie “Back to the Future” in that genealogical study is like traveling back and forth through time through a prism of many views. When I look back I see two parents and four grandparents (in my case it is actually six since my father has both biological and adoptive parents). Where my each of my parents is one-half of my history they are only one-forth of my children’s history. My curiosity was piqued when my father was close to his end. I asked him some questions and his answers made me more curious but work and life go in the way of me digging deeper. Once he passed and I retired I started to look for his past. The technology of Ancestry.com became the vehicle. He believed that his biological family and adoptive family were connected. That was where I started. From newspaper articles and Ancestry.com entries I was able to track down his adoptive mother’s family, the Jones’.
In the last decade DNA became a significant part of genealogical research. Using DNA technology I was able to determine that my father was not biologically connected to the Jones family. In the continued dialog of nature versus nurture I appreciate the importance of the adoptive families and have detailed information about the Jones and Sage family histories. DNA unmasked an Irish family that emigrated to America in the nineteenth century as my father’s paternal line. His maternal line is a less clear but there is an unconnected group of people that seem to be from my father’s maternal path.
Looking forward to my children Michelle and Paul have the Spaulding family in addition to me. Bill and Lori have biological parents the Cards and Barragers. I will be sharing what I (think I) know about the six families responsible for my place on the planet. Hopefully others will share what they know about these family members.
My mother’s paternal family, the Aumicks, started in what is now Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York in the seventeenth century. They slowly migrated to Monmouth, New Jersey and finally settled in Bradford County Pennsylvania along the mighty Susquehanna River.
My mother’s maternal family, the Woodruffs and Howards, came from New England before the Revolutionary War and many also settled in Pennsylvania.
My father’s history is very complicated. He was adopted by Grover Sage and Catherine Jones. Grover’s family has roots in the the New York and New Jersey from before the country gained its independence. I have found Catherine Jones’ family in Central New York before the Civil War.
Thanks to Y-Chromosome tracking I now know that my father’s paternal ancestry comes from an Irish family that came to America in the early 1840s. Autosomal DNA pointers for my father’s maternal side point to a small group of people from central NY that I have found little information on.
